Description:
Children from low-income households have higher rates of obesity compared to their high-income peers. Summer has been identified as a critical window for weight-gain in children. Summer day camps can provide a structured and consistent environment for children during summer months when schools close and access to resources for many families diminish. This funded study is a pilot randomized clinical trial where children who are overweight or have obesity and are from low-income households will receive a pediatrician referral to attend an 8-week summer camp for free. The study will examine feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a potential real-world solution that improves health and has great potential for scalability given the widespread presence of summer camps and pediatric health clinics in communities across the U.S.
