Description:
“Who is Mermaid” is an Art-Driven Anthology of the Mermaid myth. Each entry in the anthology will include a fully rendered illustration, created by me, as well as supplemental images, and a written portion that describes the details about the myth. The anthology will be made up of two parts: Part one will cover from the first-ever mermaid myth, and end with the most famous published mermaid story. (Atargatis from Assyrian mythology (1000 BCE) up to the Hans Christian Anderson version of The Little Mermaid, published in 1837) Roughly ~2837 years. It is not possible to include every single mermaid conceived of in that time; therefore, certain myths will be selected for inclusion based on their cultural relevance and influence. The second part will be made up of two sections. Section one will be dedicated to Urban Myth & sightings, section two will cover Contemporary portrayals of mermaids in culture. The Modern Culture section will begin with the Mexican Lotería game from 1887 up to the most relevant recent mermaid portrayals Research is still ongoing. I am currently seeking new additions to the list in all sections, and I am open to retrospective revisions if necessary or adjusting the project’s scope. - So far there are: - 28 mermaid myths that are sure to be on the list that need scholarly resources. 18 leads that need to be followed up on to verify their inclusion or not, + sources for each. 29 myths that have been excluded, with 5 that need review to see if they get re-added. 30 Modern Culture Mermaids that need to be combed over and thinned down to potentially 20 or less. 4 Urban legends/sightings on the list, more need to be added to this section. - The main tasks: - 1. Review the Leads to Investigate and determine if the lead is a worthwhile inclusion to the list. 2. To help me source scholarly resources for the myths on the list, 3 sources per myth would be ideal. 3. Assist me with making final judgment calls about who gets on the list, or who does not. 4. Each entry will require a short 300 word written story summary (longer as needed) assisting me in writing these summaries would be ideal. 5. Peer-reviewing the illustrations I created of each myth. 6. Provide me with new leads if discovered. My hope is that anyone who assists me would help for only 3 hours per week, or for whatever time they were comfortable. The brunt of the work I would handle myself. The skills desired are: 1. Writing 2. Research 3. Illustration (optional) 4. Layout My hope would be to use Notion as our main platform of operations so I could oversee the work. And another means of social media to communicate. Any help would be appreciated.
